SUMMARY:Forest Restoration Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Free Workshop\nIncludes Lunch \nLearn the process of restoring a 6-acre forest at the Mount Rose Preserve in Hopewell Township. Michael Van Clef\, Stewardship Director of Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space\, and Jared Rosenbaum\, Botanist with Wild Ridge Plants\, will discuss the comprehensive stewardship plan developed and the steps taken to restore this forest\, including the installation of deer fencing and planting of 2\,000 native wildflowers specially selected and grown for the site. Topics will include initial site surveying/mapping\, restoration site selection\, utilization of the quantitative Floristic Quality Assessment Index to establish a baseline within and adjacent to the restoration area\, restoration plant species selection\, determination of planting areas and planting patterns\, and implementation utilizing volunteers to support planting activities. The workshop will start at the office of FOHVOS and end with a walking tour of the restoration site. Participants will be invited to hike the trails of Mount Rose Preserve after the program. SUMMARY:Birding Hike at Mount Rose Preserve with Tyler Christensen
DESCRIPTION:Registration Required \nGrab your binoculars and join this early morning bird hike with FoHVOS Land Stewards; Tyler Christensen and Beth Craighead on the first day of fall on the Forest Trail at Mount Rose Preserve. This newly acquired preserve provides a variety of habitats for a number of interesting bird species. Our focus will be on identifying winter migrant and resident birds that are found at the preserve. \nThis birding experience available due to the generosity of FoHVOS members and sponsored by Clif Bar and Bristol-Myers Squibb. BMS generously supports FoHVOS events to get people out in nature. They have not only provided financial support\, but have also sent over 50 employees to help build the trails you will experience on this birding hike. Clif Bar is supplying a treat for every attendee.\n\nRegister\nMount Rose Preserve\nMount Rose Preserve is owned and managed by New Jersey Conservation Foundation\, Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space\, Hopewell Township and Mercer County. It was preserved in partnership with the following additional organizations: Hopewell Valley Citizens Group Inc.\, NJ Green Acres Program\, Stony Brook Millstone-Watershed Association\, Lawrence Hopewell Trail\, Hopewell Borough\, Pennington Borough\, Friends of Princeton Open Space\, D&R Greenway Land Trust\, Lawrence Township and Princeton. \nTyler Christensen\nis a FoHVOS land steward and conducts wildlife surveys and ecological monitoring on our preserves. He is a licensed bird bander\, conducting research on owls\, hummingbirds and songbirds from New Jersey to Costa Rica. Tyler is also an accomplished nature photographer; his photos featuring New Jersey’s rare wildlife and habitats have been featured in numerous books and publications. He is the director of the non-profit Wild Bird Research Group and a board member of Washington Crossing Audubon Society and the owner of Piedmont Ecological Services\, LLC. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Slow down and become immersed in the natural environment. Tune into the smells\, textures\, tastes and sights of the forest.
