DESCRIPTION:Please join Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space on Sunday\, February 17 at 9AM for the Great Backyard Bird Count at the Thompson Preserve on Route 654.  We will be helping to count birds to take a real time snapshot of birds in our area.  Our list will help researchers learn about how birds are doing\, if populations are changing or remaining stable.  We will walk the trail and count what we see and hear.  The list will then be submitted to eBird\, a website dedicated to birds. \nOr\, if you prefer\, you can count birds in your own backyard.  The GBBC lasts from February 15-18.  Spend at least 15 minutes (or longer) on any of those days counting the birds you encounter and submit the list to eBird\, or send it to me and I can submit it for you.  This can be done anywhere and anytime.  The GBBC is a fun way to help the birds and you don’t have to leave the house if you don’t want to. \nIf you are interested in going on the walk\, please register at bcraighead@fohvos.org.  Dress for the weather and bring binoculars if you have them.

This is when volunteers conduct bird counts all across the country. Each count occurs within a 15 mile wide diameter circle. The nearest one to us is the Princeton Circle\, although there are others. The Princeton Circle includes some of Pennington and Hopewell. Please visit: \nhttps://www.audubon.org/content/join-christmas-bird-count \nfor more information. If you live within the circle\, you can register to be a feeder counter if you would rather not go outside. You can stay at home and report the birds that visit your feeder on count day. You must register with the count compiler to participate. Visit the National Audubon Society website for more details. \nThis is a great way to help the Audubon Society gather information about bird species in our area and it is FREE to participate.

Dr. Michael Van Clef\, Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space\, will discuss research on deer management programs and impacts in Hopewell Valley. Jim Ferry\, Princeton Township\, will discuss his experience with contract deer hunters. The audience will be invited to share challenges and strategies they employ to address deer control. \nTicks\nDr. Robert Jordan\, Monmouth County Mosquito Control Division\, will discuss recent research results about ticks\, including varieties emerging in NJ. He will provide information about how to keep visitors as well as managers and stewards safe from health impacts. He will also share messages to deliver to the public about these pests. \nNew Tools in the War against Invasive Species\nDr. Michael Van Clef\, NJ Invasive Species Strike Team\, will describe the features of a phone app developed to identify and report invasive plants and animals\, as well as publicly available web data services and resources. \nThe workshop brings together public and nonprofit land managers of natural lands. This is the 5th annual workshop organized in partnership with the NJ Recreation and Parks Association and the NJ Land Trust Network.

SUMMARY:Birding Hike at Mount Rose Preserve with Tyler Christensen
DESCRIPTION:Registration Required \nGrab your binoculars and join this early morning bird hike with FoHVOS Land Stewards; Tyler Christensen and Beth Craighead on the first day of fall on the Forest Trail at Mount Rose Preserve. This newly acquired preserve provides a variety of habitats for a number of interesting bird species. Our focus will be on identifying winter migrant and resident birds that are found at the preserve. \nThis birding experience available due to the generosity of FoHVOS members and sponsored by Clif Bar and Bristol-Myers Squibb. BMS generously supports FoHVOS events to get people out in nature. They have not only provided financial support\, but have also sent over 50 employees to help build the trails you will experience on this birding hike. Clif Bar is supplying a treat for every attendee.\n\nRegister\nMount Rose Preserve\nMount Rose Preserve is owned and managed by New Jersey Conservation Foundation\, Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space\, Hopewell Township and Mercer County. It was preserved in partnership with the following additional organizations: Hopewell Valley Citizens Group Inc.\, NJ Green Acres Program\, Stony Brook Millstone-Watershed Association\, Lawrence Hopewell Trail\, Hopewell Borough\, Pennington Borough\, Friends of Princeton Open Space\, D&R Greenway Land Trust\, Lawrence Township and Princeton. \nTyler Christensen\nis a FoHVOS land steward and conducts wildlife surveys and ecological monitoring on our preserves. He is a licensed bird bander\, conducting research on owls\, hummingbirds and songbirds from New Jersey to Costa Rica. Tyler is also an accomplished nature photographer; his photos featuring New Jersey’s rare wildlife and habitats have been featured in numerous books and publications. He is the director of the non-profit Wild Bird Research Group and a board member of Washington Crossing Audubon Society and the owner of Piedmont Ecological Services\, LLC. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
