SUMMARY:Webinar: How to Become a Management Hunter
DESCRIPTION:How to Become a Management Hunter\nBy: Brian Kubin and Mike Bellaus (Duke Farms/ FoHVOS Strike Team) \nBrian and Mike will discuss how hunters can maximize harvests through strategic approaches on public and private lands. They will provide information on what exactly management hunting is and its benefits to our ecosystem along with ways you can get involved on your local lands as a management hunter. \nStrike Team Community Conference 2020\nWebinar Series\nWebinars take place on Wednesdays from 7-8pm using Zoom.\n$5 per webinar\nRegister Here \nBrian Kubin has been professionally managing wildlife and wildlife habitat for the past fourteen years. Through his extensive\, self-taught and lifelong deer behavior and hunting knowledge\, he is focusing his efforts on deer management programs for municipalities\, public lands and private homeowners in areas overrun with abundant deer densities to improve forest health. He recently began sharing this knowledge by teaching the public How to Be a Deer Management Hunter portrayed recently in the short film The Deer Stand. He is furthering his passion for improving forest health by working with the Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space as a Land Steward battling newly emerging and high threat invasive plant populations. Brian works full time with the NJ Department of Environmental Protection. \nMike Bellaus has been professionally managing both flora and fauna in New Jersey for nearly a decade. After graduating from McDaniel College in 2010\, he worked for the New Jersey Invasive Species Strike Team and Monmouth County Park System systematically controlling invasive plant populations. He specializes in deer management with a focus on herd population reduction as well as deer management program creation and implementation. He works annually with the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife performing deer population distribution surveys and held a position on the Hopewell Township Deer Management Advisory Committee for three years. He is currently involved with the Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space as a Land Steward focusing on the control of newly emerging and highly threatening invasive plant populations but works full time as the Manager of Habitat Restoration at Duke Farms where his primary responsibility is the restoration of habitats and management of the natural resources throughout the property.

SUMMARY:Native Plant Garden Design to Create Pollinator Habitats
DESCRIPTION:Register Here!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTransform your property into a garden that is beautiful\, supports our pollinators\, provides habitat\, and requires less maintenance by using perennial native flowers\, bushes\, ground covers\, and trees. Turn lawns from monocultures into lovely rich gardens with a diversity of bloom throughout the growing season. It is the vast and quickly diminishing community of native pollinators of bees\, birds\, butterflies\, beetles\, flies\, and small mammals that work together to supply 85% of the main global crops that feed people—fruits\, vegetables\, seeds\, nuts\, and oils. This hardworking group is responsible for being the food for many other animals\, besides us\, in the ecosystem. \nTake a section of whatever your outdoor space includes and create an oasis for pollinators by planting the native plants for your area. Plan it in an arc of seasonal blooming that provides food for them in the spring\, summer\, and fall. Because all these plants are perennials\, their root systems grow deeper every year and thereby sequester more carbon as part of the connection with climate change that aides in the greening of our planet. \nYou can still have some lawn but implement better practices for it. You can still have some of your favorite annuals—just not the ones that jump into our forest and choke out the necessary diversity of growth. You will discover the incredible beauty of our native plants and the knock-your-socks-off intricate and colorful patterns that our native pollinators are dressed in. Not even our most outstanding clothing designers can match the delicacy of detail that is on display. \nJudith K. Robinson has studied the relationship between soil\, plant\, and pollinator health since her first organic food garden. She teaches workshops that explain how you can create beautiful gardens filled with native plants that require less maintenance than many common garden plants and that also provide food and other crucial support services for our birds\, butterflies\, and native bees. She designs these garden pollinator ecosystems for all available garden sizes; teaches Native Plant Garden Design at Mercer County Community College and at the Princeton Adult School; and delivers workshops to businesses\, organizations\, libraries\, and schools. In 2009 she co-founded and for five years managed the flourishing Princeton Farmers’ Market. \nAll of her work focuses on teaching the tools for healthy environmental practices. Understanding the reasons for an action and then the how of implementing it\, leads to commitment.

SUMMARY:Great Backyard Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Please join Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space on Sunday\, February 16 at 9AM for the Great Backyard Bird Count at the Thompson Preserve on Route 654. We will be helping to count birds to take a real time snapshot of birds in our area. Our list will help researchers learn about how birds are doing\, if populations are changing or remaining stable. We will walk the trail and count what we see and hear. The list will then be submitted to eBird\, a website dedicated to birds. \nOr\, if you prefer\, you can count birds in your own backyard. The GBBC lasts from February 14-17. Spend at least 15 minutes (or longer) on any of those days counting the birds you encounter and submit the list to eBird\, or send it to me and I can submit it for you. This can be done anywhere and anytime. The GBBC is a fun way to help the birds and you don’t have to leave the house if you don’t want to. \nIf you are interested in going on the walk\, please register at bcraighead@fohvos.org. Dress for the weather and bring binoculars if you have them.

SUMMARY:Christmas Bird Count 2019
DESCRIPTION:This December\, the National Audubon Society is organizing its 120th Christmas Bird Count. This is when volunteers conduct bird counts all across the country. These counts take place from Saturday\, December 14\, 2019 to Sunday\, January 5\, 2020. Each count occurs within a 15 mile wide diameter circle. The nearest one to us is the Princeton Circle\, which will be held on Sunday\, December 15\, 2019\, although there are others. The Princeton Circle includes some of Pennington and Hopewell. \nPlease visit: https://www.audubon.org/conservation/join-christmas-bird-count for more information. \nIf you live within the circle\, you can register to be a feeder counter if you would rather not go outside. You can stay at home and report the birds that visit your feeder on count day. You must register with the count compiler to participate\, email Brad Merritt if you want to help (balmerritt@aol.com) Visit the National Audubon Society website for more details. \nThis is a great way to help the Audubon Society gather information about bird species in our area and it is FREE to participate.
