SUMMARY:Preserving the Valley and Growing Backyard Biodiversity
DESCRIPTION:Curious about how your property can help support wildlife\, protect clean water\, and strengthen our region’s resilience? Join FoHVOS\, an accredited land trust in Hopewell\, NJ\, and discover how every property\, no matter the size\, contributes to the health of the Valley and the broader Central Jersey landscape. \n\n\n\nDuring this program\, FoHVOS Executive Director Jennifer Rogers will introduce our new Ecological Priority Model\, a science-based tool designed to help landowners\, municipalities\, and conservation partners understand where conservation actions can make the greatest impact. \n\n\n\nDeveloped through the FoHVOS Community Conservation and Resiliency Plan\, funded by a Land Trust Alliance & Open Space Institute Land & Climate Grant\, the model highlights areas of high ecological value across 141\,000 acres in 13 municipalities\, including the entire Sourland Mountain region. \n\n\n\nParticipants will explore:  \n\n\n\n\nThe data and mapping behind the model\n\n\n\nThe priority areas identified\n\n\n\nHow individual properties fit into the larger conservation picture\n\n\n\n\nWhether you care for a few garden beds or many acres\, your land matters and can help steward the Valley and beyond. Join a growing network of residents who are taking meaningful action to support wildlife\, restore habitat\, and make our region more resilient — one yard at a time. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Today!

SUMMARY:POSTPONED Meadow in the Making! Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Conservation Connections: Restoring Nature in Hopewell Borough \n\n\n\nFriends of Hopewell Valley Open Space (FoHVOS) has been awarded funds through the American Water Charitable Foundation’s 2026 Water and Environment Grant\, part of the Keep Communities Flowing Program. This program supports initiatives that advance water protection\, environmental education\, and community resilience across New Jersey. \n\n\n\nOur funded project\, Conservation Connections: Restoring Nature in Hopewell Borough\, will improve Hopewell Borough Park through habitat restoration\, community engagement and education. Building on existing native planting efforts at Hopewell Elementary School and along Bedens Brook\, the project will replace unused lawn spaces with native wildflower meadows and feature streamside plantings that improve biodiversity and help absorb stormwater within the Raritan River watershed. Bat nesting boxes will be installed adjacent to Beden’s Brook to support local wildlife. As part of this project\, FoHVOS will provide the HVRSD EcoPTO with 500 wildflower plugs for their planting project at Hopewell Elementary School. \n\n\n\nGrant funded activities in the park are scheduled to begin the last week of August\, and will start with site preparation for the Park’s new wildflower meadow. In order to provide space and resources for the meadow seeds to germinate next spring\, the lawn and weeds in the meadow’s footprint will be treated. Expect to see a dead lawn patch in the southern section of the park\, near the Phragmites patch. These improvements are designed to create a healthier ecosystem while maintaining a welcoming community space. \n\n\n\nA restoration project walking tour will be hosted for the public interested in the effort on the evening of Thursday\, August 27 from 6:30-7:30 pm at the Park. FoHVOS staff will provide a site tour of the restoration program\, sharing project steps and expectations. Feel free to come with questions!   \n\n\n\nThrough hands-on conservation efforts involving residents\, volunteers\, and students\, FoHVOS aims to inspire local action and demonstrate how small\, community-driven projects can make a meaningful difference. At a time when pollinators\, birds\, and bats face significant challenges\, this initiative will help to grow Hopewell Borough Park into a habitat for wildlife and a beloved gathering place for generations to come. \n\n\n\nFollow Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space on social media to learn more about upcoming project events: native plantings\, bat walks\, and bird outings. We’d love to see you in the Park!  \n\n\n\n\nRegister today!

SUMMARY:Introduction to Nature Journaling
DESCRIPTION:AN EVENING OUTDOORS – EVERYONE WELCOME \n\n\n\nMake a date with nature: an introduction to Nature Journaling \n\n\n\nOn occasion we need to escape the day-to-day and spend a little quality time together. Nature journaling is a lovely way to slow down and give the natural world our full attention — to sit close\, look a little longer\, and let it surprise us. Like a good conversation\, it builds calm focus\, sharpens memory\, and sparks creativity\, deepening a bond that grows richer with time. \n\n\n\nIn this easygoing session we’ll record what we notice — through drawings\, diagrams\, words\, and numbers — and try a few fun exercises together. We’ll cover the basics and explore from there. \n\n\n\nNo previous experience or special skills necessary. Basic materials will be on provided but bring a journal and if you already have one wear comfortable clothes and be prepared to sit outdoors for awhile. \n\n\n\nAbout the InstructorTerry Smith artist\, teacher and cofounder of the Pollinator Posse\, has journaled everywhere from her own backyard to far-flung destinations since taking part in the earliest Nature Journaling events with recognized expert John Muir Laws. She loves sharing the sense of wonder and discovery that unfolds through the practice — no matter what ends up on the page. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister today!

SUMMARY:Hopewell Borough Park Bat Walk
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that nine species of bats can be found in New Jersey? Bats are a critical part of our ecosystem\, as they are a major predator of nocturnal insects. As part of our Conservation Connections: Restoring Nature in Hopewell Borough project\, funded by the American Water Charitable Foundation\, we have installed bat nesting boxes near Bedens Brook to support local species. \n\n\n\nJoin us on a guided walk through the park to learn about bat ecology\, the importance of bats\, and to see science in action as we set up an acoustic monitoring device to collect data on the abundance and diversity of our local bat population. \n\n\n\nPlease bring a headlamp or flashlight and wear good walking shoes. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nRegister today!
