SUMMARY:Natural Lands Stewardship Workshop - Deer and Invasive Species Management
DESCRIPTION:Topics: Invasive Species & Deer Management\nCost: $25 (includes lunch)\n\n\n\n\nRSVP: Required  Click here\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nJoin public and private managers of natural lands for a day-long workshop discussing the following topics: \nStewarding Natural Lands in Urban Areas\nRobert Rodriguez\, Liberty State Park; Justin Dennis\, NJ Conservation Foundation; and Richard Lear\, Middlesex County Office of Parks and Recreation will discuss challenges and keys to success in managing natural lands in more populated areas. \nForest Health\nDr. Jay Kelly\, Raritan Valley Community College\, will discuss his research on forest change and impacts to forest health resulting from overabundant deer\, invasive plant species\, and land use history\, with implications for forest management and restoration. \nDeer Management Panel\nLauren Wasilauski\, Montgomery Township\, will share features of a deer management program she applies. Dr. Michael Van Clef\, Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space\, will discuss research on deer management programs and impacts in Hopewell Valley. Jim Ferry\, Princeton Township\, will discuss his experience with contract deer hunters. The audience will be invited to share challenges and strategies they employ to address deer control. \nTicks\nDr. Robert Jordan\, Monmouth County Mosquito Control Division\, will discuss recent research results about ticks\, including varieties emerging in NJ. He will provide information about how to keep visitors as well as managers and stewards safe from health impacts. He will also share messages to deliver to the public about these pests. \nNew Tools in the War against Invasive Species\nDr. Michael Van Clef\, NJ Invasive Species Strike Team\, will describe the features of a phone app developed to identify and report invasive plants and animals\, as well as publicly available web data services and resources. \nThe workshop brings together public and nonprofit land managers of natural lands. This is the 5th annual workshop organized in partnership with the NJ Recreation and Parks Association and the NJ Land Trust Network.
