SUMMARY:National Trails Day Hike
DESCRIPTION:National Trails Day Hike\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn celebration of National Trails Day\, FoHVOS is hosting a guided hike on Saturday June 7th. This hike will take place at Heritage Preserve and will be led by long-time FoHVOS volunteer Serge Goldstein. Join Serge as he points out the unique nature features and discusses the impact of the small forest fire that occurred at the Preserve last fall. \nAbout Our Preserve: Heritage Preserve was acquired in 2008 and features a unique trail experience that takes a visitor through several stages of forest succession—meadow\, forested wetlands of red maples\, mature forest\, and a dense stand of sweet gum. In the spring\, beautiful displays of woodland wildflowers like spring beauty\, Canada mayflower and trout lily take up the forest floor. The wetlands are also home to vernal pools that many amphibians rely on for breeding. \nDate: Saturday June 7 \nTime: 10:00AM \nLocation: Heritage Preserve \n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Great Backyard Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Please join Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space on Sunday\, February 16 at 9AM for the Great Backyard Bird Count at the Heritage Preserve on Reed Road. We will be helping to count birds to take a real time snapshot of birds in our area. Our list will help researchers learn about how birds are doing\, if populations are changing or remaining stable. We will walk the trail and count what we see and hear. The list will then be submitted to eBird\, a website dedicated to birds. \n\n\n\nOr\, if you prefer\, you can count birds in your own backyard. The GBBC lasts from February 14-17. Spend at least 15 minutes (or longer) on any of those days counting the birds you encounter and submit the list to eBird\, or send it to us and we can submit it for you. This can be done anywhere and anytime. The GBBC is a fun way to help the birds and you don’t have to leave the house if you don’t want to. \n\n\n\nDress for the weather. Bring binoculars if you have them. Please be aware that the trail may be verymuddy or snow covered! Click on the registration link below\, or email bcraighead@fohvos.org with any questions. \n\n\n\n\nSign up for the GBBC!

SUMMARY:SUMMER HIKE SERIES - Mount Rose Preserve
DESCRIPTION:SUMMER HIKE SERIES MOUNT ROSE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease join us on Friday August 16th at Mount Rose Preserve for an evening hike. One of our newer trails\, we will explore early successional red cedar stands and a mature forest of mixed hardwoods and American beech. The forest trail also goes past our forest restoration project\, featuring a deer exclosure protecting native plants from excessive browse. \nThe walk will take place from 6:00PM to 7:30PM. Registration is required due to limited parking. \n\nRegister\n\n\nThis hike is part of the FoHVOS SUMMER HIKE SERIES. Join FoHVOS throughout the growing season (through October)\, to discover a variety of great hikes in our preserves!  We’ll host two hikes each month\, a morning weekend hike and an evening hike\, as daylight allows. These events are planned to keep a casual to modest pace\, and will include stops to interpret seasonal nature\, from bird song and butterfly behavior to summer wildflower identification and insect-admiring. Terrain will differ with each hike\, depending on location.    \nThese hikes will be led by our Executive Director\, Jenn Rogers. No experience is necessary to join these hikes\, just advanced registration\, as parking lot and trail conditions limit the number of participants. If you have binoculars\, and like using them\, bring them along too!

SUMMARY:Seasonal Nature Walk at Fiddler's Creek Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Seasonal Nature Walk at Fiddler’s Creek Preserve\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFiddler’s Creek Preserve had been the “missing piece” of preserved land between Washington Crossing State Park and Baldpate Mountain for many years. After being protected in 2010\, a large-scale reforestation was implemented. \nWe’ll walk on shady creek-side trails\, through 40 acres of young forest\, and stop by Wild Bird Research Group’s bird banding station. This is a great opportunity to stretch your legs\, understand the role of restoration in our community\, explore a new preserve\, and possibly see a few songbirds up-close! This hike is led by Jenn Rogers\, Executive Director of FoHVOS. \n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\nThis event is FREE

SUMMARY:Great Backyard Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Please join Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space on Sunday\, February 16 at 9AM for the Great Backyard Bird Count at the Thompson Preserve on Route 654. We will be helping to count birds to take a real time snapshot of birds in our area. Our list will help researchers learn about how birds are doing\, if populations are changing or remaining stable. We will walk the trail and count what we see and hear. The list will then be submitted to eBird\, a website dedicated to birds. \nOr\, if you prefer\, you can count birds in your own backyard. The GBBC lasts from February 14-17. Spend at least 15 minutes (or longer) on any of those days counting the birds you encounter and submit the list to eBird\, or send it to me and I can submit it for you. This can be done anywhere and anytime. The GBBC is a fun way to help the birds and you don’t have to leave the house if you don’t want to. \nIf you are interested in going on the walk\, please register at bcraighead@fohvos.org. Dress for the weather and bring binoculars if you have them.

SUMMARY:Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Red Tailed hawk at Heritage Preserve\n \n \n \n \n \n Vultures at Thompson Preserve.\n \n \n \nThis December\, the National Audubon Society is organizing its 119th Christmas Bird Count. This is when volunteers conduct bird counts all across the country. Each count occurs within a 15 mile wide diameter circle. The nearest one to us is the Princeton Circle\, although there are others. The Princeton Circle includes some of Pennington and Hopewell. Please visit: \nhttps://www.audubon.org/content/join-christmas-bird-count \nfor more information. If you live within the circle\, you can register to be a feeder counter if you would rather not go outside. You can stay at home and report the birds that visit your feeder on count day. You must register with the count compiler to participate. Visit the National Audubon Society website for more details. \nThis is a great way to help the Audubon Society gather information about bird species in our area and it is FREE to participate.
